Ask your ISP. Today, with fibre or not, your router will incorporate the modem needed.

Hello, i think the main purpose of routers and modems is basically linking to internet or telephone connections on your pc.

Your computer will have a wireless network adapter installed. This will detect all wireless networks within range.

Depending on which Internet Service Provider you use, you should have been provided with a wireless router. This plugs into your telephone line or cable box (whichever you have), and will broadcast its network name. If you use the Windows operating system, you'll see a small icon that looks like a computer monitor in the system tray in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.

Click on it, and you'll be presented with a list of the detected wireless networks - one of which will be yours. Click on it, and you'll be asked to enter the password that your ISP provided. Do that, and your computer will connect to the internet.

Modems are basically the devices used for modulating the Analog Signal to Digital Signal and vice versa in order to carry the Digial Signal/Data over the Analog carrier.

In your case, the Analog carrier is the ISP connection which can be either a telephone line connection (DSL) or a cable connection or fiber connection or even the WISP (Wireless ISP). Depending upon the type of internet connection you can opt for the modems or you will be provided one by your internet provider.

Most of the DSL/ADSL+ or ADSL/VDSL routers come with built in modem for your telephone line connection. You can opt for these ones in case of Telephone line connection if your internet provider has not provided any modem or router.

In case they have installed a modem for you, you can go for a pure wireless router wherein the router would be configured as per the settings configured on the modem.

For instance, if you have DSL/ADSL modem installed in a bridge mode, then configure the wireless router in PPPoE mode with the username and password provided by your ISP. And if the DSL/ADSL modem is configured in PPPoE mode, then configure the wireless router in Dynamic mode.
