The best cheap internet security software

  johnincrete 12:21 05 Oct 2018

My granddaughter is studying at a university in UK. She has just bought a new laptop. Can you please advise what protection software she needs? She accesses the internet frequently and, I guess, she frequently uses USB sticks to pass on and to receive information. As a student, free or cheap software is most acceptable!

How "Tech Savvy" is she?

There's an abundance of very good 'free' Software out there.

What Make & Model Lappy has she got?

I have used AVG free on laptops that don't get a massive amount of use and use AVG paid on my main PC. There are many deals via sellers such as Amazon. You can get a package that can includes cover for several devices - phone, tablet, laptop, for example.

It will have been drummed into your grandaughter at school to back up her work regularly and this cannot be over-emphasised - I have consoled many students and graduates that have lost work. A word of warning about using usb sticks to receive and pass on information. They are very prone to corruption and, of course, can be a way of spreading a virus. I assume your grandaughter has Windows 10 on her new laptop and perhaps she should back up all of her work in the cloud on Google Drive, for example. These days most students use e-mail to pass and receive information rather than usb sticks - another useful way of backing up work.

Found AVG and Avast bloated and annoying with pop ups

The best Free antivirus is now Kaspersky free (I use the paid for version but the virus database is the same) back it up with the free versions of Malwarebytes and ADWcleaner.

Back up to either the cloud or an external hard drive daily the last thing a student needs is to lose their work.

If a lot of foreign USB drives are going to be used then I would suggest turning off Autoplay altogether. When a flash drive is then connected then going to file explorer you can right click the drive and scan it with your security software before use. Settings - Devices - Autoplay.

If she is using W10, all she needs is Windows Defender.
