Win 7 PC keeps hanging. Do I reinstall?

  tech291pca 12:13 05 Oct 2018

HI,

I have a decent Win 7 Pro machine that I use for high end CAD etc. It keeps freezing and I have to wait ten minutes while it sorts itself out. I've had it professionally looked at and it's better but getting worse again.

I've got the latest Win updates, and run Malwarebytes etc and all seems ok. Plenty of drive space and everything. Drivers up to date too. No particular program causing the issues. Nothing shows in task manager as a memory or processor hog.

I've almost had enough and thinking of just biting the bullet and doing a complete reinstall.

But before I commit to what is obviously a lot of work and time, I thought I'd ask if anyone has any suggestions what could be causing it?

Thanks

Les

Clean the dust out of the inside before you try anything else.

The Processor and the Graphics Card will have a 'finned' heat exchanger attached to them. Make sure that there is no dust between the fins so that the fan can drag air through them.

Also try

Open a command prompt (admin)

type sfc /scannow

Press enter and let windows scan for and replace any missing or corrupt system files. This may take awhile to complete.

Hi Wee Eddie. This has been going on for about two months now and shortly after it started I gave the machine a good clean out, including the power supply and even the graphics card fan etc. I even had the heat-sink off the processor and put it back with new compound.

Sadly, while it was worth doing it didn't change anything.

I'll give the scan a go later.

Why not upgrade to wins 10?

I had the same problem and I ran "chkdsk /f C:" in a command window. Errors were found and fixed but the problem returned so I repeated the same a few times and each time errors were found and fixed. Also backup software (Macrium Reflect) could not run due to errors on disk. Conclusion = HDD was failing. I replaced my HDD, reinstalled Windows and all was well and remain so. In case your HDD is failing backup all your files ASAP.

Hi guys,

Ran checkdisk and it did find a couple of errors. Even if it fixed them I'm thinking that if I'm going to do a whole reinstall I might as well fit a new drive. The drive that's in there is a replacement that I fitted only two years ago.

I've just been looking at internal drives and there are a lot out there. Some are designed for always on security applications and others don't say. Is there anything I should be looking for specifically.

I have been looking at this: SEAGATE BarraCuda 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - 2 TB

Any reason why not? It's local.

Best Regards

Les

See, my PC is stuttering so bad it's made me post twice! Sorry guys.

And eddie, yes, I had the cover off the graphics card and cleaned the heatsink properly.
