Vodafone has an extensive Global Roaming coverage with talk, text and 4G data in 137 countries. If you’re travelling within Europe, it can come at no additional costs.
We’ve broken down how roaming works on Vodafone, for both Pay Monthly and Pay As You Go Vodafone customers – including roam-free countries, data roaming costs, roaming outside of Europe and more.
Pay Monthly - Vodafone Roam Abroad (travel within Europe)
Global Roaming is included in all Pay Monthly plans, except Basic plans. This means you can use your data, text and minutes abroad as you would in the UK if you're traveling within Europe.
If you’re traveling to any of the 48 roam-free European countries, you won’t be charged anything additional. We've listed all qualifying countries below, though you can also look at Vodafone's handy document.
Austria, Azores, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canary Islands, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic
D - F
Denmark (inc Faroe Islands), Estonia, Finland, France (inc Corsica), French Guiana
G - H
Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Guadeloupe, Guernsey, Hungary
Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Jersey, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg
M - R
Madeira, Malta, Martinique, Mayotte, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Reunion, Romania
S - Z
San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (inc Balearic Islands), St Martin, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Vatican City
Vodafone Roam-Further (travel to Eastern Europe, Asia, North America, South/Central America, Africa and Australia)
If you’re traveling outside the European roam-free countries listed above – such as to countries in South America or Asia – you will be charged £6 per day to use your home plan of data, minutes and texts. The £6 is only charged on the days you use your phone and you won’t be charged for receiving calls or texts.
If you use your phone while traveling on a ferry or plane, this may connect you to a Maritime or Aerospace network. In this case, when contacting a number in the UK, Vodafone charges the standard Maritime/Aerospace roaming costs, which are as follows:
- Making calls - £2.40 a minute
- Receiving calls - £1.80 a minute
- Sending texts - 60p per text
You will not be able to send a picture message or use data however if you're connected to a Maritime or Aerospace network.
If you go over your allotted monthly text, call and data allowance, you would pay the same standard rate as you would within the UK. Out of plan data is capped at £39.33. For more details about the data cap see Vodafone's FAQ section here.
Pay As You Go - Global Roaming rates
Pay As You Go customers don’t have access to Global Roaming, but if you’re traveling within the Europe Zone (see table above), you won’t be charged any additional roaming fees if you stay within your usage allowance.
If however, you travel to a Roam-Further country (i.e. outside Europe, the US for example) you would need to pay a separate roaming rate. You can find your rate based on which country you're going to here.
If you’re on a Big Value Bundle, you can use the data, minutes and texts included in your package, again, without paying any additional roaming fees provided you're traveling within the Europe Zone.
Pays As You Go 1 customers aren’t charged additional roaming fees either if travelling within the Europe Zone.
If you’re traveling within the Europe Zone and are not on any of these Pay As You Go plans, or if you use up your included data, minutes and texts, you would need to pay the standard UK rates, which are:
- 30p per minute for calls to UK mobiles, landlines and voicemail
- 14p per text message
- 45p for a UK picture message
Vodafone roaming Extras
Extras are add-ons to your existing payment plan that give you more flexibility when abroad and can also help you save. You can use these services in the Europe Zone.
Pay Monthly Extras
Pay Monthly customers can benefit from a few Extras (see them all here), but customers abroad will probably benefit most from the "300 minutes to UK mobiles and landlines" option. It's a good back up if you're out of minutes from your regular plan and need to call home, to the UK, often.
This costs an additional £3 per month. You can activate it by texting 300 to 97888 from your Vodafone phone. You can discontinue the service from your Vodafone account.
Pay As You Go Extras
Pay As You Go customers have a few Extras to choose from as well. For instance, you can get an extra 2GB of data for £10 for 30 days by calling 46205 from your Vodafone mobile. To stop, text STOPDATA to 49500.
You can also add 50 extra international minutes for £5 for 30 days. To activate this service, call 34443 from your phone. To stop, text STOPINTERNATIONAL to 49500. You can see which countries qualify here.
If you only need to call home to the UK when abroad, you can buy 100 minutes to UK mobile and landline numbers starting with 01, 02 and 03. Call 34442 to get this service. You can stop it by texting STOPMINS to 49500.
Vodafone data roaming charges
If you go over your UK data allowance when in Europe you will only be charged what you would be charged in the UK. If you are outside Europe, your rate may be slightly different. You can see UK data charges here, which varies depending on whether you’re a Pay Monthy or Pay As You Go Customer.
To see how much data would cost outside the Europe Zone, use this tool from Vodafone, which breaks down costs for both Pay Monthly and Pay As You Go Customers. The cost for additional data for Pay Monthly customers involves a few variables such as when you signed up with Vodafone, whether you have both a Vodafone phone and SIM, just a Vodafone SIM, or a tablet/dongle or Mobile Wi-Fi from Vodafone.
Vodafone RED Roaming (travel from Ireland to Europe Zone)
If you’re a Vodafone customer travelling from Ireland to other countries in the Europe Zone, you can opt into RED Roaming. For €2.99 a day, RED Roaming allows unlimited calls and texts back to Ireland and to numbers in the country you’re visiting.
Other things to know:
- Some Vodafone monthly plans may include NOW TV Entertainment or Sky Sports Mobile TV passes. These won’t work abroad, though Spotify will.
- If your phone doesn’t work abroad, call 191
- If you want to access voicemail abroad, call 121. Then select 4 and then 2. See our detailed article on accessing voicemail across all networks here.
