The Mi Mix 2S is just a few months old, announced at the end of March and on sale in early April, but a Mi Mix 3 is but weeks away and could launch on 15 September 2018 with an even smaller bottom bezel, a pop-up selfie camera and an in-display fingerprint scanner.
As one of our biggest gripes on previous models, the possibility of a redesigned selfie camera comes as music to our ears. It's also something that has been rumoured for many upcoming phones in 2019 following its success on the Vivo Nex.
Leaked launch event teasers reveal the bottom of the device, and if genuine the chin looks to be no larger than the phone's side bezels (now around 3mm). This will increase the screen-to-body ratio and make the now shorter 5.99in smartphone easier to hold.
This smaller chin is also visible in a leaked photo of a Mi Mix 3 and screen glass/protector, but more interestingly this image also reveals an embedded fingerprint scanner (previously found on the rear of the Mi Mix). This has so far been seen only in the Mi 8 Explorer Edition.
When is the Mi Mix 3 release date?
Although it has not yet been officially confirmed, a leaked launch event posted points to 15 September 2018 as the date we'll see a new Mi Mix.
How much will the Mi Mix 3 cost?
According to Android Pure there will be standard and ceramic versions of the Mi Mix 3 with the following RRPs:
Mi Mix 3 Standard
- 6GB RAM + 64GB ROM: 3399 Yuan (£383/US$496)
- 6GB RAM + 128GB ROM: 3699 Yuan (£417/$540)
- 8GB RAM + 128GB ROM: 3999 Yuan (£451/$584)
- 8GB RAM + 256GB ROM: 4299 Yuan (£485/$627)
Mi Mix 3 Ceramic
- 6GB RAM + 64GB ROM: 4399 Yuan (£496/$642)
- 6GB RAM + 128GB ROM: 4699 Yuan (£530/$686)
- 8GB RAM + 128GB ROM: 4999 Yuan (£564/$729)
- 8GB RAM + 256GB ROM: 5299 Yuan (£597/$773)
Remember that because Xiaomi phones are not officially sold in the UK you will need to purchase the Mi Mix 3 through channels such as GearBest or Geekbuying. Expect to pay a slight premium, and remember to factor in import duty (20%) when shipping to the UK, but even with this you should find fantastic value.
Mi Mix 3 specifications
Other than the smaller bottom bezel, in-display fingerprint scanner and pop-up selfie camera we know little about the upcoming Mi Mix 3's spec, but we can safely assume we'll see many of the same specs as in the Mix 2S.
Therefore, you should expect the Snapdragon 845 processor with 6- or 8GB of RAM, 64-, 128- or 256GB of storage, a dual AI camera, Qi wireless charging and a 5.99in Full-HD+ 18:9 display. The size, weight and battery capacity could all be affected by the shorter body, however, and there's also speculation over the new Mi Mix getting a dedicated AI button.
As before there will likely be a black model with 18k gold detailing on the rear, and a white model with Chrome detail. There is also talk of a Ceramic model, and of a Ferrari Special Edition.
