Announced in June 2018, the Moto Z3 Play was never joined in the UK by the standard Moto Z3. It's possible that for the Z4 series we will again see only the Play model go on sale here, with the Moto Z4 Play expected to be announced in the UK in mid-2019.

Bizarrely the Moto Z3 and Moto Z3 Play were incredibly similar devices, with the standard model taking the Snapdragon 835 processor (of 2017 rather than 2018 flagship fame) in place of the Play's mid-range Snapdragon 636. In design they are identical, right down to the 6in 18:9 AMOLED display and side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Interestingly, the fingerprint sensor is expected to be one of the major changes for the Z4 Play, moving from its side position to an in-display position. The screen will also see design changes, now sporting a waterdrop-style notch to house the front camera and sensors.

New CAD-based renders from @OnLeaks and CompareRaja also reveal a single-lens camera front and rear (previously dual- at the back, potentially as a cost-cutting exercise to allow for the new in-display fingerprint sensor).

Both USB-C and 3.5mm headphone jack remain, while the screen has been bumped from 6in to around 6.2in. The handset is said to be a little taller and thicker to allow for these changes, but also slightly narrower at 158x75x7.25mm.

Don't expect the design to change a great deal beyond this if the Moto Z4 Play is to continue to be compatible with Moto Mods (which the renders suggest it will be), accessories that add functionality by snapping on to the back of the phone via magnets.

Presuming the Z4 Play is another mid-range smartphone, we'd like to see it running the Snapdragon 710 processor. If a standard Z4 is announced it will likely come with the Snapdragon 845 or more recent 855.

When is the Moto Z4 Play release date?

We don't expect to see a Moto Z4 Play before the summer, likely launching in June 2019 and on sale in July.

How much will the Moto Z4 Play cost?

If the unconfirmed rumours of an in-display fingerprint sensor prove genuine we could see a small price bump for the Moto Z4 Play over its predecessor. Otherwise expect similar pricing. The Moto Z3 Play was an Amazon exclusive at £439 ($499.99).
