Nokia made its comeback to the Android market in January 2017 with the Nokia 6, and we've been waiting two years now for its long-rumoured flagship Nokia 9 to arrive. At MWC 2018 we thought that time was here, and then we got the the Nokia 8 Sirocco. But now the wait could really, really be over, as the Nokia 9 is tipped to land before the end of January 2019.
The full name for the upcoming smartphone is thought to be the Nokia 9 PureView, according to Roland Quandt, after HMD recently acquired the trademark. In the past PureView cameras have had very high megapixel counts; in 2019 it could allude to a crazy five-lens camera assembly at the rear - a rumour that first appeared way back in 2018, though we thought was intended for the Nokia 10.
Talk of the five-lens Nokia had gone quiet until ITHome posted the following image, revealing five rear cameras, a flash and a sensor, complete with Zeiss branding:
Nokia's parent company HMD recently purchased the PureView trademark, and has invested in Pelican Imaging, a startup concerned with multiple-lens cameras. So it may not all be as crazy as it sounds.
The original tip-off also pointed to the Snapdragon 845 processor, a 10nm chip that is powerful and efficient, and featured in nearly all current flagships. This processor is capable of running up to seven cameras, so it's certainly not out of the question, though it would be a shame (if not a surprise) not to see the more recently announced 855 inside.
Another exciting rumour is that the Nokia 9 will feature an in-display fingerprint sensor, integrated to the 5.99in 1440x2960 HDR panel. There could also be 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a 4,150mAh battery, and it will run Android One.
In common with the Sirocco we'd expect to see wireless charging and waterproofing, but no headphone jack.
When is the Nokia 9 release date?
According to Nokia Anew the Nokia 9 will be announced before the end of January. The site says an event will take place in the last week of the month, placing it oddly between CES and MWC.
If not then, an MWC launch around 25 February seems likely.
How much will the Nokia 9 cost?
It's common sense to assume the flagship Nokia 9 will cost more than the Nokia 8 Sirocco, which costs £649. With this in mind we'd expect the Nokia 9 to be priced around £700-£750.
